WINTER ROAD SAND
FOR RESIDENTIAL USE
TORRINGTON, CT 06790 –
Road sand for snow and ice control for Torrington residents only, will be available at the Torrington Street Department located at 107 Arthur Street on the following Saturdays:
November 21, 2009
December 19, 2009
January 16, 2010
February 13, 2010
Gates will open at 8:00 AM and close at 12:00 Noon. Sand will be limited to two 5-gallon pails per Torrington resident and will be enforced by City staff. In the event of a snow storm during any of the scheduled days, the sand distribution will be postponed to the following Saturday.
The City will not be distributing any sandboxes this winter, so residents are encouraged to take advantage of the scheduled pickup days.
In response to increasing environmental concerns, the City has been gradually eliminating use of sand on local roads. For the upcoming winter, the City’s use of sand will stop in its entirety for snow storms. Snow management will be performed by plowing and application of de-icing products including salt and treated salt. A small stockpile of sand will be maintained by the City for emergency use on city streets in the event of ice storms.
Residents are encouraged to also consider elimination of sand and use de-icing products that are readily available at most local stores. Sand for residential use will not be available next winter.
