cards.jpgTorrington's Department of Services for the Elderly was established in 1968.  The activities of the Department are administered from the Sullivan Senior Center, a multipurpose center and focal point for people age 60 and over. The center, located at 88 East Albert Street, is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and evenings and weekends for special activities.

The mission of the Senior Center is to provide a facility where people meet for the purpose of participating in social, nutritional, educational and support services in order to enhance and enrich their lives.  The Center strives to meet the needs of the older population by developing programs utilizing local, State and Federal resources.

cafe2.jpgThe full service center publishes a monthly newsletter detailing the center's activities and programming.  A lifetime membership photo ID card is available, although membership is not required to participate in activities. A wide variety of recreational programs include: seniorcize, yoga, senior swim, craft classes, card tournaments, bingo, holiday parties, art and painting classes, billiards, indoor shuffleboard, movies and jam sessions.

shuffle.jpgThe Department administers the Elderly Nutrition Program in a 19-town region, offering meals-on-wheels and congregate meals in senior centers and community centers.  Transportation service is available to transport people to medical appointments and the Chore Program offers housekeeping services to those most in need.

Health programs are coordinated with our local hospital to include full physicals, health and wellness screenings, foot care clinics, in-home assessments, nutrition counseling and flu and pneumonia immunizations.

Educational classes and seminars are scheduled to keep people up to date on the latest information affecting their well-being and to teach foreign language and develop computer skills.  Staff will help people with assistance applications, such as renter's rebate, ConnPACE, fuel assistance, medical and insurance forms, information, referrals and any issue of importance to them.  Volunteer opportunities are numerous and contribute to the overall socialization within the center and community.
