D.A.R.E.
D.A.R.E.

The D.A.R.E. Program was created in 1983 by L.A. Police Chief Daryl Gates.  Today the program is present in more than half of the United States school districts in 50 states and 13 foreign countries.

D.A.R.E.'s primary mission is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug and violence free lives.  It establishes a positive relationship between students and law enforcement, teachers, and parents.  The 17 week program teaches students to recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them experiment with drugs, and instead, allow them to focus on their strengths and potential.

In Torrington, the program is being taught in the grammar schools, middle school, and high school.  The Torrington Police Department currently has eight D.A.R.E. officers.
